Lebanese PM Holds Talks with Irish Counterpart in Lebanon

(MENAFN) Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam held talks Saturday with Irish counterpart Micheal Martin in Beirut, addressing Lebanon's evolving situation and strengthening diplomatic ties between the nations.

Salam welcomed Martin at the Grand Serail for discussions examining conditions throughout Lebanon, particularly in southern territories, alongside bilateral cooperation opportunities, according to a statement from Salam's office posted on X, the social media platform owned by the U.S. company.

Martin arrived in Lebanon Saturday for a pre-holiday trip to meet Irish military personnel deployed with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), media confirmed.

Last October, Ireland turned down an Israeli demand to pull its forces from UNIFIL, media reported.

The UN Security Council voted in August to terminate UNIFIL's authorization on Dec. 31, 2026, establishing a subsequent 12-month withdrawal framework for gradual force reduction.

UNIFIL was created in 1978 following Israel's incursion into southern Lebanon, with its responsibilities substantially broadened after the July 2006 conflict and UN Resolution 1701. The operation currently deploys over 10,000 military personnel charged with overseeing hostility cessation and assisting the Lebanese army south of the Litani River.

Israel and Lebanon finalized a ceasefire in November 2024 following more than a year of cross-border hostilities during the Gaza war. Over 4,000 individuals lost their lives, with 17,000 additional casualties wounded.

The truce terms required Israeli forces to evacuate southern Lebanon by January, yet they have completed only a partial retreat, continuing military occupation at five frontier positions.
