Western Leaders Warn of Crisis from Israeli Ground Offensive in Lebanon
In a joint statement, the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK expressed “grave concern” over the escalating violence in Lebanon and across the Middle East. They emphasized that a large-scale ground operation “must be averted,” noting it could worsen the already severe humanitarian crisis and create long-term regional instability.
"We strongly support initiatives to facilitate talks and urge for immediate de-escalation," the statement added.
The warning comes as the Israeli army expanded airstrikes throughout Lebanon, including Beirut, on March 2, following cross-border attacks by Hezbollah after a joint US-Israel offensive against Iran. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that a ground operation had begun in Lebanon.
The recent violence has killed more than 800 people, including women and children, and displaced nearly a million residents. The statement condemned attacks on civilians, health workers, infrastructure, and UN personnel as “unacceptable,” urging Israeli and Lebanese representatives to engage in meaningful negotiations and adhere to international humanitarian law.
"A significant Israeli ground offensive would have devastating humanitarian consequences and could lead to a protracted conflict. It must be averted. The humanitarian situation in Lebanon, including ongoing mass displacement, is already deeply alarming," the joint statement said.
