Lebanese Farmland Faces Extensive Damage
In its initial weekly update since the recent escalation, the ministry stated that approximately 46,479 hectares of farmland, representing 22% of the country’s total arable land, have been impacted.
The majority of destruction was concentrated in the South and Nabatieh governorates, where 44,297 hectares were affected, in contrast to 2,181 hectares in other areas of the country.
Fruit orchards and olive groves, in addition to greenhouses and small- to medium-sized farms, were among the most severely damaged.
The report cautioned that "widespread displacement increases the risk of food insecurity," especially given interruptions to the agricultural cycle and the loss of labor.
It further noted the decimation of about 49% of beehives and 39% of fish stocks, along with assorted losses among cattle, sheep, and poultry populations.
