UN Urges Israel, Lebanon to Boost Diplomacy Ahead of Washington Talks
“We encourage both Lebanon and Israel to leverage all available diplomatic avenues at their disposal to immediately end hostilities and address outstanding provisions under Security Council resolution 1701,” a UN spokesman said during a briefing.
The UN also reaffirmed its willingness to assist the parties in advancing diplomatic efforts, according to the spokesman.
The conflict escalated after Israeli strikes on Lebanon began following the US-Israeli war on Iran at the end of February. Since then, the violence has resulted in more than 2,000 deaths and has displaced over one million people.
After a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, Lebanon and Israel agreed to begin discussions, with the first round of talks scheduled for Tuesday in Washington.
Iran and the United States also engaged in discussions in Islamabad on Saturday aimed at securing a lasting end to the war, although no final agreement was reached.
The UN spokesman added that the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, continues her “good offices” efforts to support dialogue between the parties and work toward a lasting ceasefire and a stable political solution.
He also noted that the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) remains active on the ground, continuing operations related to de-confliction, civilian protection, and facilitating humanitarian access “to the extent possible amid ongoing hostilities.”
