Lebanese President Expresses Hope for Ceasefire Ahead of Washington Talks
During a meeting in Beirut with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Aoun said he hoped the scheduled discussions would produce meaningful progress toward ending hostilities.
“There is now an opportunity to reach a sustainable solution, which is what Lebanon wants,” he said, according to official statements. He added that any resolution must involve mutual engagement rather than unilateral action.
Aoun also called for an end to Israeli military operations, stressing that diplomatic efforts remain the most effective path for resolving armed conflicts.
“Israel must respond to Lebanese, Arab, and international calls to halt its assaults against Lebanon and start negotiations,” he said.
He further argued that previous Israeli military campaigns in Lebanon have failed to achieve their objectives, and said ongoing destruction will not lead to a lasting solution.
The remarks come ahead of planned meetings in Washington involving Lebanese and Israeli representatives aimed at negotiating a ceasefire framework and exploring direct dialogue.
Tensions remain high as Israeli military operations continue in Lebanon following earlier cross-border hostilities, despite a previous ceasefire agreement reached in late 2024. Lebanese authorities say thousands of casualties have been recorded since the escalation began.
