Ranking Member Shaheen Travels to New York for the United Nations General Assembly High Level Week
NEW YORK CITY – This week, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, traveled to New York City for the 81st United Nations General Assembly High Level Week. During the trip, Ranking Member Shaheen met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Belarusian democratic forces leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. She also joined the U.S. delegation for President Trump’s address to the General Assembly and participated in public discussions at the Concordia Annual Summit and World Economic Forum.

In meetings with Ambassador Waltz, Ambassador Jeff Bartos and other officials at the UN, Ranking Member Shaheen emphasized that sustained U.S. leadership at the United Nations advances American security and economic interests. She discussed efforts to make the institution more effective while ensuring that U.S. retreat does not create opportunities for China and other adversaries to shape global rules. The Senator also discussed diplomatic efforts to end the wars in Ukraine and Iran, as well as respond to the humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan.
During her meeting with President Zelenskyy, Ranking Member Shaheen reaffirmed strong bipartisan support for Ukraine and discussed Russia’s escalating attacks against Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure. She highlighted the newly enacted Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act and emphasized the importance of using its authorities to cut off the revenues financing Putin’s war and force Russia to negotiate a just and lasting peace backed by meaningful security guarantees.
In meetings with leaders from Syria, South Korea, the Philippines, Lebanon, the UAE and Qatar, Ranking Member Shaheen discussed regional security, economic and defense cooperation and diplomatic efforts to promote stability. She also reaffirmed support for the Belarusian people’s democratic aspirations in her meeting with Tsikhanouskaya. Across her engagements, Ranking Member Shaheen underscored that American diplomacy and strong international partnerships make the United States safer and more prosperous at home.
