ICYMI: John Sununu Took Over $90,000 in Campaign Contributions from “MAGA Megadonor,” “Walmart Heir”

In Case You Missed It, new reporting in The Daily Beast’s The Swamp newsletter shows that Donald Trump-endorsed candidate John Sununu “received more than $90,000 in donations from the children of other heirs,” — including “MAGA megadonor” John J. Cafaro, who received a no-bid contract to clean Trump’s reflecting pool, and “Walmart heir Jim C. Walton.” 

Sununu’s campaign is bankrolled by the same pro-Trump millionaires and corporate special interest backers he’s running to represent.

• [...] Republican Senate candidate John E. Sununu, member of the New Hampshire political dynasty, has been making his campaign a pro-family affair. Pro-family as in getting money from other families. The seat is one of the few Republicans think they might be able to flip, with the pools suggesting it’s pretty tight with Democrat Chris Pappas. 
• A review of donations to Sununu, the son of former Governor John H. Sununu, and brother of Governor Chris Sununu, found he’s received more than $90,000 in donations from the children of other heirs. 
• Chief among them was a donation from MAGA megadonor John J. Cafaro, whose father, developer William A. Cafaro, left his family $800 million in 1998. Cafaro gave Team Sununu $12,500, FEC records show. If that name sounds familiar, it’s the same Cafaro, a convicted felon and doppelganger for Fat Tony in The Simpsons, who owned Greenwater Services, the business that received the no-bid contract for Trump’s botched Reflecting Pool, as The New York Times previously reported.
• Then there’s Anthony Ghosn, who donated $25,000 to Sununu’s Senate bid. An unusual surname, you might think. And you’d be right! He’s the son of Lebanese-Brazilian former Nissan CEO and fugitive millionaire Carlos Ghosn, who fled Japan in 2019 in a music case while out on bail for financial misconduct. 
• At the same time, Nijad Fares, son of Lebanese businessman Issam Fares, gave Sununu $7,000 between this year and last. (The Sununu clan trace their roots to, among other places, Lebanon.) Walmart heir Jim C. Walton also donated $7,000 to Sununu in April. 
• Add to that socialite Diane “Dede” Wilsey, heir to Dow Chemical Company, who gave $7,000 to Team Sununu in June. Her son, former Ambassador Trevor Traina, also gave Sununu $10,000. His middle name also happens to be Dow.
• And then there’s one of the ultimate political nepobabies of all time: President George W. Bush, who gave Sununu $7,000 last December. Of course, the pair’s political ties go way back as Sununu’s father was President George H.W. Bush’s chief of staff. 
• Meanwhile, Representative Chris Pappas, the Democrat running against Sununu for the senate seat, comes from a family with its own claim to fame. Pappas’s grandfather Charlie invented the chicken tender at The Puritan Backroom, the family’s restaurant in Manchester, NH.
