Lebanon Accuses Israel of Violating US-Mediated Agreement

(MENAFN) Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel on Monday of repeatedly breaching a US-mediated framework agreement signed in June, saying continued violations in southern Lebanon were undermining efforts to resolve tensions through diplomacy.

Aoun made the statements during talks with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy at the presidential palace in Baabda, near Beirut, according to an official statement.

“The Israelis have not adhered to the framework agreement, and the south continues to face daily violations,” Aoun said.

He argued that continued Israeli actions would not achieve their intended goals but would instead reinforce Lebanese determination to protect the country's territory and rights.

According to the president, the ongoing violations are also hindering the Lebanese government's efforts to carry out its declared priorities and address the challenges facing the country.

Despite the difficulties surrounding diplomatic efforts, Aoun reiterated Beirut's commitment to pursuing a peaceful resolution, emphasizing that negotiations would carry a much lower cost than renewed large-scale fighting.

He described diplomacy as “far less costly than the devastating war” for which the Lebanese population, particularly communities in the south, continues to bear the consequences.

“It is time for Lebanon to have some peace,” he added.

Aoun also welcomed potential initiatives by the Arab League to assist Lebanon in confronting its current challenges and improving the country's circumstances.
